Climate Stories From Around The Globe: Featuring Kayra Dayi

Writer: Arielle KouyoumdjianArielle Kouyoumdjian

CPJ Journal is asking readers from around the globe to describe (in a medium they choose) how climate change is impacting themselves and their community. Congratulations to our first featured teen, Kayra Dayi!

Her art is deeply stirring and thought-provoking. The monochromatic color scheme and surreal figures evoke apprehension in the viewer. Kayra simultaneously sends out a cry for climate action to the world, while also allowing the world to peek into her mind.

I am almost 16 years old and live in South Florida. Living in Florida, it is inevitable not to see changes as the climate gets warmer. Although Florida’s heat has always been irresistible, it has never been deadly. With all the climate changes around you, it is hard not to feel anxious and fearful of the future. Climate change has made me question its impact not only on us but on animals as well, which I tried to depict in my painting. The circular motions symbolize the constant thinking that goes in my mind.
